Day 217- Goop!

When I was a little girl, my mother cooked very plain meals- meat, potatoes, canned vegetable, sometimes jello.  My mother learned to cook a new exotic dish when I was about ten. There was some event going on, maybe at church or in one of her women’s groups, and her task was to make taglierini in her huge electric roaster.  We got the leftovers- WOW!  It was so different and so delicious!

You have to realize that at this point I had never even had spaghetti- even Kraft mac and cheese came later in my life.   I had my first slice of pizza and my first taco when I was away at college. So you have to realize what a big deal this was- taglierini!

It was basically hamburger and onion and tomato soup (not sauce)- with the addition of canned corn and canned mushrooms- and hunks of cheddar cheese melted into it.  It was supposed to be served with noodles- but we never had it that way.  The crowning touch was baking powder biscuits placed on top! Oh my!

My mother explained to me that it was just goop- and that’s what we called it from then on.  I served it to my own children without mushrooms but WITH pasta- and eventually changed from tomato soup to tomato sauce. I made it for Miles when I was in Wyoming last year waiting for the new baby to be born.  He loved it- and wanted it for breakfast the next day.

My grandbabies will be arriving any moment- so the goop is cooking!

  1. The colors are so rich and I can almost smell the goop. I love that your mom called it goop.
This is so unlike her to use that sort of word…she always was so dignified! How delightful you are carrying on the tradition of this dish, along with its name. I continue to marvel at all the things I have learned about you via this photo blog. I am grateful!
