Day 328- Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my family, friends, and photo friends out in the blogosphere!  Here is just one of the many things I’m thankful for- delicious baked goods made my talented daughter! How ’bout that handprint turkey on the pumpkin pie?!?

Day 305- Skittles!

Here are the Halloween leftovers (de-bagged for the photo)- SKITTLES!  These have always been my son’s favorite candy- so Matt- this photo is for YOU!

Day 250- Pears

Bosc pears caught my eye at the grocery store. Later, at home, they caught my photographer eye- aha! A photo op!

I played around with them a little in Photoshop.  I hadn’t thought to put a backdrop behind- and who wants to see my family room?- so I darkened the background and added Kim Klassen’s crackerjack texture in multiply mode.  I like the resulting mysterious, dark mood of the photo- quite different from my original shot.

To backtrack- I had just this morning read an inspiring piece by wildlife photographer, Moose Peterson about how important it is to not crop and to visualize the final image as you photograph it- finding the light etc. etc. Well, I didn’t crop- but my final image is quite different from my original concept! Oh well- not having to crop is a step forward for me!

Day 224- Rice Salad

The recipe for Cold Rice Salad was given to me by my friend, Kathryn (the one with the backyard vineyard!), years ago after she brought me some to eat at school one day. It became a tradition that, after one of us would make the salad for our family, we would bring the leftovers to school to share.  Cold Rice Salad is one of those dishes that you either LOVE or don’t want to even try.  It has something to do with the marinated artichokes that are a dominant ingredient.  In our family, my son-in-law and I are passionate about this recipe- the others, well, not so much.

Tomorrow we are attending a reunion of the Rapunzel families (with children and grandchildren)- and bringing Cold Rice Salad.  Caitlin is making it today, although she will most likely not be eating it.

Day 190- A Fun Day

Photography. . . lunch at the tea room . . . Blue Ridge!  What a perfect day!

Today, my friend, Nevin came over for a photography lesson. She is planning to make the switch soon from a point and shoot to a DSLR, so I was teaching her about the exposure triangle, depth of field, and general rules of composition. It was fun to watch someone get excited about photography- she is in the same place I was just one year ago.

Afterward we had a delicious lunch at the Camellia Tea Room (I had the salad sampler- YUM!) and then browsed in an antique store.  We spotted some beautiful Blue Ridge plates, which Nevin bought me as a thank you! What a fun day!

Day 163- Guac!

We’re on our way to Napa for dinner with old friends- and I’ve been asked to bring guacamole, salsa, and chips. So,  when I tried to think of what my photo of the day should be, I went for the obvious- GUACAMOLE! Or, more correctly, the beginning of the preparation of guacamole. Yum!

Day 150- Starbuckians

It’s Macro Monday, so I took my camera and macro lens to Starbucks this morning.  We spend a lot more time (and money) in Starbucks than I care to admit.  It began over 10 years ago- whenever Starbucks came to town- as a weekly Friday before school meetup with my first grade teacher friends, a tradition that continues to this day.  As the years went by it also became a place to meet friends on a weekend morning or afternoon, as well as a place where my husband and I would stop after our gym workouts.  Now that I am retired, my husband and I continue our after-gym routine- and, on non-gym days, my husband will often make a Starbucks run for the two of us.  Living in a small town, we often see people we know there, so it’s a social outing as well.

So today’s photo (actually a collage) is a tribute to our life at Starbucks.

Day 139- Lunch

Between computer problems, changing ink cartridges, some photo editing, laundry, cleaning out the fridge, phone calls etc. etc.- I didn’t take time to think of what my photo of the day might be.

Then it was time for lunch.

I was about to grab an apple when I decided that a still life of the apples might not be a bad photo for today. So I quickly took a few shots and then…

I ate one of the apples!

Mission accomplished.

Day 124- Brunch

My Rapunzel group was scheduled to meet for coffee today.  A day or two ago, Georgia offered her house (instead of the usual coffee shop), and a quick potluck brunch was organized. With our group, impromptu events like these always end up with more food than you could imagine, and it is always delicious. Georgia’s garden is glorious- packed with dozens of types of flowers, all in bloom. We sat outside and talked and laughed and talked and laughed.  A wonderful time with dear friends!

I chose a photo of Jan’s scrumptious scones for my photo of the day.
