Day 110- Taking it to the street

I’m going with the theme today- on the street where you live. Sooooo. . . here is an easy shot looking down the street where I live:

I took it with my zoom lens using aperture priority, just because I’ve been reading about aperture priority for the class I’ve been taking (which is fabulous, by the way).  I realized that I hadn’t been using exposure compensation with aperture priority- and that is why my photos haven’t been that great using that shooting mode. This one isn’t great either- but that’s due to the fact that I didn’t focus on the nearest flower (nothing to do with my shooting mode).  I like this shot best, however, because there was a car going down the street.

Day 87- On the Road

On the road is the theme today- and the constant drizzle made getting out on the road pretty unappealing. I moved one of our bikes into the driveway and sat in the garage to take a quick photo.  My aim was to import the photo into the iPad, edit it in iPhoto, and upload it to Flickr and my blog. Importing it to the iPad was a piece of cake, but I was pretty clueless about editing it in iPhoto.  I played around with it, uploaded it to Flickr, and then tried to do the blog. WordPress wasn’t my best friend today, so I finally threw my hands in the air and am blogging old school- on my laptop.  And since I am on my laptop, I did a few edits in Aperture and Photoshop- I just can’t help myself!

And here is a new and improved version edited later on the iPad with Snapseed!

Day 83- Streets, Roads, and Sidewalks

It’s a potpourri today.  I did a ride-along with my husband on a drive to an out of town courthouse to search for some records for a claim he is handling.  Today’s topic is street photography, and yesterday’s was construction– plus it is Fence Friday. I managed to take photos for all three, but did come to the conclusion, after a short while, that street photography in this area was not particularly safe. I moved to the square in front of the courthouse, where I photographed a little girl playing in the fountain. The midday sun was harsh in all the photos, as you can see. No golden hour here!

There was construction EVERYWHERE- even on the sidewalks.

On the way back home, we stopped so I could get my Friday fence photo. Here is a black and white version . . .

and an HDR one.

Day 77- In the hood

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I don’t have anything with a St. Patrick’s Day theme to post, but there is plenty of green in all my photos. I took a quick walk in our neighborhood today, armed this time with a plastic bag to cover the camera in case of a sudden downpour.

Our neighbor’s lavender is beginning to bloom.

The lemon tree on the corner is filled with gorgeous lemons.

I didn’t realize we had cows five minutes from our house!

All in all (to quote Mr. Rogers)it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for a neighbor. . .

Day 76- A (very short) walk in the rain . . .

An appointment took me across the bridge today, so I stopped at Heather Farms to take a few photos.  Taking photos from under an umbrella was somewhat challenging, but I managed to get a few, switching to aperture priority when some large birds flew overhead and settled into the pond. They look like herons, but not the great blue one I photographed at Cosumnes- so I will call upon my friend, Carol, to identify them for me. There were a few in the pond- and one in a tree (at least I think it was the same kind- I didn’t stay long to observe).

And, because it is Fence Friday, here is a shot of the fence along the walkway.

Day 62- Down to Earth

Today’s topic is earth, wind, OR fire. I made things easy for myself- and took a shot of the ground outside.

And here’s a bonus photo from yesterday- my husband checking out my friend, Carol’s iPad, as her Amazon parrot, Bobo gazed lovingly in his direction.  Lonnie paid no attention to her, but she was absolutely besotted!

BTW, I finally updated my “about” page for 2012, including a photo taken of me by Carol yesterday. You can check it out by clicking on about in the top right corner of this page.

Day 61- Flash, Friends, and Fun

My photo buddy, Carol, and I are having a fun day at her house- dining on a gourmet salad followed by a delicious Portuguese chicken soup and sharing photo tips.  Carol is learning how to use my speedlight- and I had a Aha moment when she showed me that I don’t need to export photos from Aperture in order to upload to my blog (wish I had known this a year ago. . .).

Day 59- Leftover Lavender

Some of my lavender seemed to bloom forever this year, but for the last month or so I’ve been watching the blossoms turn brown.  I’ve always liked dried flowers- here are a few I photographed today.

Today’s Flickr group topic was VERY BIG.  When I volunteered at school today I snapped this very big teaching clock held by a very little student.

Day 53- Bodega

My husband and I are pretty sentimental about Bodega Bay.  We drove over there a lot when we were dating, when we were a young married couple, and when our kids were little.  After our kids grew up, we would take our dog, Murphy, and now we sometimes go over there with our grandchildren. Our routine when we were young was to walk the beach and then have clam chowder at The Tides (the original burned down, but a new and improved version is there now). Matt doesn’t remember much about Bodega, so we decided to take him there today.

Here is Matt checking out the restaurant

.

After lunch we ended up driving over to Doran Beach- it was cold, as usual, but we bundled up and walked the beach. Here’s Matt and his dad.

A lady about my age was expertly flying this kite.  I had to change my autofocus area settings in order to capture it, because it was whipping around so fast (I tried all the modes, not sure what I ended up in- and it isn’t in perfect focus).

Today’s Flickr theme was sound. Here are a bunch of very LOUD squawking gulls.

Day 41- Sunset, Mums, and a Selfie

Sunset was beautiful last night.

This morning, I took these photos of some chrysantheMUMS- for the theme, starts with M (only a few days behind on that one. . .) . . .

and I also took this self portrait, yesterday’s challenge.  This is what I look like every morning when I look outside, wondering what in the world I will take a photo of today (except that I am usually in my jammies- and I already did a self portrait of me in jammies back in December).

Day 15- Lovely Luna

The theme for today’s photo is GRAY! I could have taken a photo of our gray cloudy sky or my husband’s gray hair, but I chose to photograph Luna, my friend Barbara’s young, but gray whiskered shepherd mix.

Isn’t she sweet?

Day 12- It’s Grady!

I’ve redeemed myself today by asking Grady, who has colored my hair for more than ten years, if I could take his picture. I hadn’t planned on this, but my intention to photograph PEOPLE plus the opportunity to do so collided at the hair salon- so I took the chance.

He is kind of a hottie!

Here is a serious pose.

And here is my favorite shot- Grady being Grady! I love candid images- I want to do more of this type of shot.

All were taken with my 35mm 1.8-  f/2, 1/160, ISO 2000- no flash (didn’t bring it). I think a slightly smaller aperture would have helped my focus.

Day 11- On the Job

Spending half the day in a vineyard in St. Helena accompanying my husband on a fire claim  gave me a wealth of photo opportunities. I justified my presence by helping him photograph the remains from the fire.  And then I wandered around the property with my camera- fun! Next time, I would like him to schedule “our” appointments during the golden hour, please! The midday sun was a challenge.

Coincidentally, the topic of the day is “environmental portrait”, a portrait of someone in an environment that tells you something about the person.  I didn’t have the courage to ask one of the workers to pose, but (sneakily!) took this quick photo of a fire investigator through a burned out building.

Of course this blog post would not be complete without a shot of my husband doing what he seems to do most- talking on the phone while walking around the site.

Day 6- Light Seeker

Since Christmas I’ve been in a bit of a photography slump, exacerbated by my joining a new Flickr group with weekly themes, high standards, constructive criticism, and some very talented and highly skilled members.  I’m not sure it is for me.

Last night I was browsing the forums on Clickin’ Moms, when I came across a post asking for help in taking her photography to the next level, becoming more creative etc.  One of the responses was from a CM photographer whose work I admire very much; I’ve tried to find the thread to quote exactly, but can’t find it just now.  She basically said to stop trying to take pictures OF things- just go find the light.

So today I took my 85mm macro and looked for the light.

And I found it.

When I pulled into my parking slot at physical therapy this morning, the light was shining on the tree bark in front of me, and I took this shot.

The red in the background is the car in front of me.

Then when I came home and was eating lunch at the kitchen table, I looked out the window and saw light hitting the geraniums on the deck (still blooming in January. . .). These geraniums have been photographed by me many times, but perhaps not with the light hitting them this exact way or from this angle or composed just this way.

Anyway, I felt like I got my groove back!

Day 364- One more day!

Only one more day of my Project 365 for 2011!  I am going to do this again next year with some new goals- more about that tomorrow. . .

So here is a shot of our neighbors’ fishing boat all decorated for Christmas. Perhaps my last Christmas photo- but we’ll see. . .
