This summer the Prescott hummingbirds have finally discovered us! In fact I’ve seen as many as five flitting around at a time, buzzing each other in a seeming fight for territory. Our feeder is right outside the window by the kitchen sink, so I’m constantly watching them. I took my camera outside a couple days ago and had fun taking photos as the little hummers flew around me. They got closer and closer to me, trying to scare me off- but I held my ground!
Hummingbirds can be a challenge to keep in focus- but this out of focus one ended up being one of my favorites of the session. BTW the bokeh is from the morning light shining on the plum tree in the background.
I like this darker, textured version as well.
Yes, I did take some shots that were actually IN focus!

They really are quite tame or seem to be and come quite close at times. I guess it is because they know they have the advantage that they are so fast. I have so many in my yard I really need to just seat and take some pictures, oh wait it is hot outside. 🙂 Love even the ones that are blurry and with all the grain gives a lot of motion and character to the image, good stuff Melinda.

Yes- I am mailman-stalking today! I keep checking online and saw that it has arrived at our post office!
I watch “my” hummingbirds daily. You’ve created a wonderful series–truly the plum tree background helps to create a terrific set of images.

Hey, I’m not jealous. I’m thrilled! I love these. They are sensational. And, I agree, the first shot is really wonderful. It reminds me of an impressionist painting. And the bokeh is gorgeous. I love the last shot, too. He’s (she’s?) got that great in-your-face hummer attitude.

Wow! You hit a bonanza! Some wonderful hummer shots here. We’ve seen one in our side garden a few times but no luck getting him with my lens.
