I love to take photographs when it is snowy! The world is covered in a white blanket which eliminates details and simplifies the shapes, creating a toy village effect, at least in my mind. I am a fan of simple compositions in art and photography, and I think I got this shot of the house across the street down to about as simple as I could make it!
It was a white world out there yesterday morning! I knew it was supposed to snow during the night (and then maybe rain later), so when I woke up at 5:00, I didn’t try to go back to sleep. I ventured outside before the sun came up- trying to take photos in the DARK (not too successfully)- and kept going out until it was light enough to shoot without a tripod. The photo below is an iPhone shot- just as good as my Nikon photos, I think. I added a few touches in Photoshop.
The full winter moon was obscured by clouds when we got home last night- and I kept thinking about the photo I missed earlier as it rose. But all the same, I’m glad to have witnessed the timeless beauty of this winter solstice moon.

Last month I did take some family photos- here is my favorite of Caleb and his mommy and daddy.
We just returned from a very quick trip to Southern California to do a mini-Christmas celebration with my son and family for Christmas. The Christmas decorations at the mall where we ate dinner were amazing!
Maybe I’ve spent too much time watching the waves- am I the only one seeing a face out there?
This is the week my photo series is due. I abandoned my alone-in-a-crowd beach series and opted for the very simple wabi sabi series. Each photo illustrates one (or more) aspect of wabi sabi. Such basic photos are not the norm in this very advanced group, so I hope I don’t get in trouble!
This was taken at West Fork in Oak Creek Canyon a month or two ago. The leaves had just started turning- and it was a drizzly day, unfortunately.
This photo was also taken at the Eagle River Nature Center and is probably close to what Alaska looks like right now. It was taken on our Thanksgiving visit in 2016.
One of our favorite places to walk is the Nature Center in Eagle River- a gateway to Chugach State Park. I have posted many photos taken there in the last couple years. It’s always beautiful, and it’s about five minutes from our daughter’s house!.
