Spending half the day in a vineyard in St. Helena accompanying my husband on a fire claim gave me a wealth of photo opportunities. I justified my presence by helping him photograph the remains from the fire. And then I wandered around the property with my camera- fun! Next time, I would like him to schedule “our” appointments during the golden hour, please! The midday sun was a challenge.
Coincidentally, the topic of the day is “environmental portrait”, a portrait of someone in an environment that tells you something about the person. I didn’t have the courage to ask one of the workers to pose, but (sneakily!) took this quick photo of a fire investigator through a burned out building.
Of course this blog post would not be complete without a shot of my husband doing what he seems to do most- talking on the phone while walking around the site.

Wow! Great shots, all. And even in the midday sun. That’s a fascinating and unusual shot of the vines. And your environmental portraits, both of Lonnie and the fire inspector, are excellent. The composition on both is outstanding. You obviously understood the challenge. Great job. I wish I’d been there to photograph YOU “on the job” photographing. 😉
such a cool shot of the vineyard, I haven’t been to our local one is quite awhile now. Perhaps it’s time to revisit.
Your enviromental shot is awesome, sometimes the sneeky shots are the best. I really like how you shot through the burnt building so it stands out in the foreground. But like you I wish I had more courage to just ask people if it is ok to photograph them. The few, and I mean very few, times I asked them said oh sure.
B will pose with me but for only so long, then I have to start promising to go to the sporting good store while he looks around at all the “flies” and reels. That is too high I price for me to pay (LOL), so I was really thrilled when Phriend offered to model for me the other day. And I was so pleased with the out come of the session. We have already started to plan a few other sessions. Just brainstorming for a few more ideas.
