Wooden Boat Society

I came upon an amazing sight as we drove along the Homer Spit- old, rickety boats tied up or sitting amidst the wildflowers by the path along Kachemak Bay. After we ate dinner one night, I had Lonnie drop me off so I could walk along and take photos. At least one of the boats looked like someone lived in it or had lived in it. There was a small sign that said Kachemak Bay Wooden Boat Society, so I googled it and discovered it is a non-profit organization “dedicated to sharing the history, preservation, and creation of wooden boats and maritime traditions. ” So cool! They have a wooden boat festival on Labor Day, but I don’t know if these boats are part of it or not.

I found this boat particularly appealing.

On the Spit

One of the features of Homer, Alaska is the Homer Spit- a narrow strip of land extending out into Kachemak Bay. It is lined with shops and places to eat, and has a harbor where fishing boats take off and return all day long. Here is a view of one of the rows of shops and eateries.

North to Alaska

We’ve just returned from a wonderful 10 day trip to Alaska! The highlight was spending time with our daughter’s family in Eagle River. Here are the boys at the Alaska Botanical Gardens in Anchorage- they are growing up so fast!

Summer in Alaska is endless daylight, intensely green trees, flowers everywhere, tall peaks, and glaciers! Photos from this trip will be dominating my blog for the foreseeable future!

Find Your Muse

This month’s challenge for my photography club is street photography. I’m missing the meeting, because of our trip to Alaska, but I have made some effort to do some street photos over the last few months.  I hung out across the street from this shop, because I liked the words on the window- I just had to wait for someone cool to come along.

Because this image is for my blog and not for the club, I didn’t go for the typical black and white street photography look. This was edited in Topaz Impression- just for fun.

Don’t Look Back

When we were walking along the beach at Laguna, we came upon what I think was an engagement shoot. The young woman remained on the beach as the photographer headed past our group for the next set up. I took the opportunity to take a few shots thinking I could use them for some sort of image. I ended up lengthening her dress and moving her arms (she was cold and had her arms loosely folded across her chest) to make a more pleasing image. I’m not sure what she was looking back at, but I am thinking this has potential as the cover of a romantic mystery! 😉

And speaking of romance . . .today is our 47th anniversary! Happy Anniversary to us!

Bookish

I have been a collector of old school books most of my adult life- nothing valuable. When I was home raising kids and wasn’t teaching at that point, I bought old primers and readers at garage sales. Later, when I went back to teaching, I collected old readers that were being discarded and replaced by newer series. So I still have quite a few.  I still love them and decided to photograph a stack today. After shooting several different arrangements, I stacked them the way that we teachers told kids NEVER to stack books! Maybe I am becoming a rule breaker in my old age!

Blue Trees

I was housebound for almost three weeks with a tenacious virus, and am glad to say that I seem to have recovered finally. I haven’t been out with my camera since our Holbrook trip, and as a result, have been pulling photos from the archives to edit and post here, the exception being the sunflowers and chair photos from last week. Next week, we will be in Alaska- and finally I will have some opportunities for photography!

When I’m sick, I tend only seem to have enough energy for Words With Friends and photo editing apps on my iPhone. Below is one of my favorite recent iPhone creations. I took the photo out the car window as we were approaching Prescott on the trip back from Southern California in March and then edited it last week on my phone. I cropped it heavily and layered it with several textures, playing with blend modes until it looked the way I wanted. I added one more texture to the trees in Photoshop- and voila!
