At this viewpoint there were signs warning us to STAY OFF THE BRIDGE- accompanied by old photos of ladies in long skirts, hats, and boots standing on the bridge! Despite the photos, we weren’t tempted to try to walk across.

Lunar Landscape?
Our first stop at Petrified Forest was the Crystal Forest, shown above in black and white. It’s hard to get a sense of scale looking at the image- but it may help to know that the blackish chunks near the bottom of photo are cut petrified trees, perhaps two feet in diameter. They are everywhere.
And here is what the inside looks like!
We spent about an hour walking the trails of this area. It is eerily beautiful and definitely otherworldly.
C A L E B ! ! !
I’ve had a request for more baby photos! I’m happy to oblige- so here is Caleb, chilling in his favorite baby seat.
I didn’t do any formal baby portraits- he was either fussy, asleep, or we were on our way somewhere. But here are some fun shots I managed to get over the weekend.
Who does he look like? From straight on, I see some Matt- but in general, I think he favors his mommy!
On Bucket of Blood Street
We found our way here without looking for it. It’s pretty startling when your cell phone gives your location as Bucket of Blood Street! We were just driving around Holbrook and found our way to the railroad station; that’s when I looked at my app for directions and discovered what street we were on! Of course the name refers to an infamous bar fight when Holbrook was a cowboy town. By the way, I did NOT take this photo- I meant to, but got distracted.
Here is one of the photos I did take on Bucket of Blood Street. I was attracted to the sight of the daytime moon over the roofline of this old building, which now seems to serve mostly as a site for AA meetings.
Globetrotting
We have been slow to explore our new (to us) state of Arizona, but managed to have a little getaway in the town of Holbrook a few days ago. Our goal was to visit the nearby Petrified Forest National Park (we did), but we also enjoyed the town of Holbrook itself. Our motel was right on the main drag and was like a time capsule of the 1960’s (although with a big screen TV and other modern touches). In the next few days, I’ll post some shots from our excursion to the Petrified Forest.

8 Degrees of Meghan Markle
My cousin is getting married on Saturday! We aren’t able to make the wedding, unfortunately, and actually will probably not be able to watch the ceremony live (we will be visiting our newest grandson, Caleb!)- but we wish her well!
Yes, I’m talking about THAT wedding!
One of the benefits of working on genealogy for almost 30 years is that you know who your ancestors are- so, when I saw an article on my iPhone’s CNN app naming Capt. Christopher Hussey (one of the original proprietors of Nantucket Island) as an ancestor of Meghan Markle, I must have gasped out loud- Christopher Hussey is my ninth great grandfather!
Since then, I have researched Meghan’s ancestry in order to place her in our family tree. We are actually both descended from Christopher Hussey’s daughter Mary Hussey and her husband Christopher Page. This makes us eighth cousins once removed (8C1R in genealogy lingo).
Here’s a screenshot from my genealogy program:
I actually tend to add famous people to my tree whenever I find a connection- just for fun. I can’t say that I’m descended from anyone famous (Lonnie is one up on me, because he has a Mayflower ancestor. . .), but I do share DNA with quite a few names you’d recognize (including several presidents, writers, Hollywood people, and . . . a serial killer). You likely have famous relatives too- perhaps Meghan Markle!
BTW, the title of this blog refers to the Kevin Bacon Game (6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon), which was a fad about 20 years ago, in case you forgot. And, not to be a name dropper, BUT- I’m only a few degrees away from Kevin Bacon himself (through marriage not DNA, alas).
Ok- back to photography . . .
