Yet another. . .

Happy Friday! Can you stand to look at yet another photo from the upper terraces at Mammoth? I hope so, because this is one of my favorite photos from the trip! I just love the combination of hot and cold, snow and steam- and the life that manages to survive in that landscape.

It is sublime, Melinda. Photos are always interesting when there is the juxtaposition of calmness and dynamism, the “conflict” of serenity and chaos. Without that bank of cloud roiling in the background, the blanket of snow and the lone tree — inertia of winter locked in cold—, the image would have none of the excitement that this photo has. Well done!!! When I saw it, I GASPED. ๐Ÿ™‚ And the lighting is …magnificent. Snow is a devil to shoot, but you have managed to give (even) it “life” with shadows and textures and forms, so that one KNOWS there is landscape beneath. Landforms pushing toward the viewer in the foreground add color to contrast with the icy whites and greys of winter and tease the viewer with the promise of summer colors. Another technical coup: you’ve done the Golden Mean perfectly with three elements placed rather elegantly: clouds and horizon, top; tree, mid-line, landform, bottom. Be sure to use THIS image to teach that concept when you teach your classes someday ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚
